National Do It Yourself day was April 6, but we are celebrating all month. I generally do a combination of DIY and purchased decor in our properties, but I also love to save money. The result is, I try to limit my purchases to major bargain shopping no matter which project I am working on.

For DIY design it helps to stay up to date on the current trends (watch the home and garden magazines/shows) and know what is available in stores to be able to duplicate a look. I tend to use neutral colors for walls and furniture to avoid needing to redecorate with every new style and color trend. I incorporate trendy colors and designs through easily replaceable items like pillows and throws. It is much more economical to change out 3 couch pillows than to change out a couch.

And let the loveliness of our Lord, our God, rest on us, confirming the work that we do. Oh, yes. Affirm the work that we do! Psalms 90:12 MSG

You can duplicate Crate and Barrel looks with Hobby Lobby trays and assorted glass votives. You can find designer pillows at bargain prices in World Market and Ross. I have recently discovered Big Lots! and all the good bargains available, from sheets, towels, dishes and vases to my signature gas fireplaces. Take some time. Know what you like. It is not hard to figure out how to duplicate a designer look with economical materials and a little bit of elbow grease. DIY is the way to make your home staging and design budget go further, last longer and bring more beauty and joy to your property.

Happy DIY-ing,

Karen Conrad
