Mindy’s Dilemma was a living room that needed new furniture, more seating and a recliner for her husband. Not as easy as it should have been, but I love how it turned out. Let me know what you think!

First of all I want to talk about the fireplace area. Many homes built around this time have sheetrock shelves built on either side of the fireplace/mantle. I have run into this problem consistently with homes of this age, where the shelves are not really functional but have become a catch all. I recommend removing the shelves and replacing them with the buffets you can see in the photo. These are from Wayfair, and I have used buffets from Pottery Barn as well. They fit perfectly and look so classy.

I placed the television on one side and balanced the weight of the room with some decorative suitcases on the other side. The floating shelves above and on each side give you a place for additional decor, like greenery and family photos. The picture above the fireplace is an interesting forest scene incorporating the sage green that I used for accents, like the lumbar pillows on the chairs.

It took some searching, but I found these ivory swivel recliners on Wayfair. They can turn to watch television or face each other or the couch for conversations. I added a brown leather sofa for contrast. Leather recliners and an off-white sofa would work too! I prefer this combination because the ivory next to the buffets looks so classy and the brown leather sofa grounds the room.

The area rug I chose was an 8X10 farmhouse rug. I added end tables with lamps, a round coffee table and some off-white, rustic vases with greenery. I put a floor lamp behind one of the recliners for a reader, making the room meet Mindy’s desires for more seating and not one RECLINER, but two!
